A Little About RPG Games…

A RPG, or Role Playing Game, is a game where players inhabit a character, either created uniquely by the player or the game’s developers, and are placed in a fictional setting. Players are tasked with accomplishing goals and objectives setup with the story line of the game. Many of the decisions taken in RPGs tend to affect future actions of the game dynamically. This means that the path players follow is rarely linear and pre-determined.

When the genre first came into play, RPGs were originally much slower paced than the ones gamers are accustomed to today. In previous times, RPGs were explored through a series of conversations and scripted events. Today, with the enhancement of gaming technology, live action is commonplace in RPGs. Although there is still a fair amount of exploring, conversations and non-action elements to RPGs, action keeps the kids entertained.

In recent years, MMORPGS, or Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Games, have been tremendously popular among gamers. This sub-genre places all the familiar RPG elements online so players can play against humans as opposed to bots. MMORPGs also tend to reduce the importance of a linear story to focus on collaboration between peers to complete objectives as a team. The player’s focus is turned to improving their character’s ability rather then uncovering the next plot turn.

With little infrastructure, a small community and lean development team, it is not always easy for an indie developer to put out a RPG that is deep in scope. However, with the rise in popularity, established indie game developers have put their brain power towards developing some instant classics for the RPG genre!
