The Best Indie First-Person Shooters:
A Little About FPS Games…
The first-person shooter genre allows players to inhabit the game’s protagonist from a first person perspective and use guns as the primary method for killing enemies and solving puzzles. More often than not, FPS games tend to fall under the action games genre.
One of the key elements that popularized shooter games, or the FPS genre, was the development of 3D graphics. This allowed developers to create vast landscapes that meshed well with first-person shooters that are driven forward with intense action sequences. The ability to use 3D graphics also added a layer of realism to shooters compared to 2D FPSs because it allowed for gravity, collision, and lighting. This allowed players to hide in dark corners, use environmental factors to their benefit and feel like they’re down in the trenches with their comrades.
First person shooters look to provide gamers with varying degrees of combat to keep them interested in both single and multiplayer modes. This can be focused around simple action sequences where killing the enemies is the prime objective to rescuing hostages from an enemy encampment. Although franchises such as Modern Warfare and Battlefield have been quite profitable for Activision and EA respectively, first person shooters in the indie game industry have been trying to develop games that expand upon the safe and traditional bubble gamers are used to.
